Pet Insight Project
A pioneering mission to collect and interpret the health stories of hundreds of thousands of dogs to improve the lives of pets everywhere.
Our History
Pet Insight Project - a team of veterinarians, data scientists, and technologists - launched in 2018 in partnership with Banfield Pet Hospital and Whistle Labs, distributing 100,000 Whistle FIT Health Monitors to Banfield Pet Hospital dog owners.
Over the next few years, this cohort of Banfield “citizen scientists” dog owners would contribute tens of thousands of videos of their dogs to the Pet Insight Project team, supporting the development of FilterNET, a machine learning architecture that translates accelerometer data from a Whistle device into canine behavior - like scratching and eating.
Banfield’s Electronic Medical Record system - the largest custom-built practice management and electronic veterinary health record system in the world - enriches this canine behavior dataset by providing reliable insight into the health histories of Whistle-wearing dogs in the Citizen Scientist program.
Today, the Pet Insight Team continues to investigate the intersections of these canine behaviors and health histories, creating new product features to help pet owners care for their pets, and partnering with researchers to enable new discoveries.
Pet Insight for Researchers
