What Happens When A Pup And A Porcupine Meet?

We hear a lot of stories about dogs that are escape artists, anxiety-driven runners or curious creatures who end up lost, and luckily, found.

One of our favorite stories of all time was that of Ernie, the Jack Russell Terrier who managed to disappear in seconds and call to his mama from 12 feet below ground.

You're probably asking, how did he get underground? Enter porcupine.

Ernie is accustomed to running off leash on long hikes in the wilderness, so when he spotted the prickly porcupine scuffling along the trail, he took off.

Ernie's owner explained that he was “out of sight” in just a short couple of minutes. She used his Whistle GPS Pet Tracker to locate him.

This is where it gets weird. Ernie's owner tracked him on the map right to a spot near where she was standing. There was nothing there. She stood there perplexed by the situation. Then, she heard a faint bark coming from somewhere nearby. After a few more barks, she realized he was underneath her. Ernie was trapped somewhere underground and calling to her for help.

She called rescue workers to the scene where they proceeded to uncover a 12-foot deep cave, where Ernie had pursued his porcupine.

The porcupine was kind enough to leave Ernie some quills in the face as a parting gift, but other than that, Ernie was just fine.

The moral of the story is to make sure you have your Whistle GPS Pet Tracker on your pup so you can find him, even in the weirdest of situations. Oh, and to avoid porcupines if possible.

Here are some helpful tips in case your pup does have a run-in with our friend the porcupine:

  • Take your dog to the vet immediately.
  • Don't try and remove the quills yourself as it could cause even more problems if done incorrectly.
  • Try to keep your dog calm and limit movement while getting him to the vet.
